Spring king salmon

The 2014, spring king salmon fishing season is in full swing now with the onset of warmer temperatures and longer days. Anglers are seeing a few fish harvested in North Douglas off the rocks at False Outer Point and marine boat anglers are encountering a few fish around the waters of Douglas Island and South Shelter Island as well as the backside of Admiralty Island. Local reports indicate fishing is quite a bit better than last spring so hopefully this is a good sign of more fish to come in the following weeks. Look for fishing to improve steadily over the next few weeks as catch rates typically peak in late-May through June. Anglers are having good luck using larger herring while trolling or casting from shore.

Cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden

Freshwater and saltwater shoreline fishing for trout and char along the roadside is beginning to pick up. Water temperatures have really climbed over the last week leading to Dolly Varden and cutthroat outmigrations along the road system. Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout can be found at the mouths of many creeks feeding on salmon smolt. Anglers will use small spinners or smolt pattern flies to catch hungry fish actively feeding on this important food source. Over the next few weeks local anglers will have luck finding fish at the mouth of Montana Creek, Salmon Creek, Peterson Creek and salt chuck, Cowee Creek and along the saltwater shoreline of Gastineau Channel.
