(Juneau) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is announcing that beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, September 1, fishing for coho salmon and snagging will be prohibited within a 300-yard radius of the Wayside Park Fishing Dock (Channel Wayside fishing dock: see attached map). The 300-yard radius is marked on the shoreline by ADF&G regulatory markers, the western boundary is located at the Samson Tug and Barge loading facility property line, and the eastern boundary is located at the DIPAC property line east of the holding pond. Snagging or attempting to snag is prohibited in this area for all species. Coho salmon may not be targeted, retained, or possessed. Coho salmon hooked elsewhere than the mouth, caught while fishing for other species, must be released immediately. This closure will be in effect from September 1 through September 21, 2022.

Coho salmon returning to the Douglas Island Pink and Chum (DIPAC) Inc. Macaulay Salmon Hatchery are not expected to meet hatchery broodstock goals this year. The return of hatchery produced coho salmon to Juneau waters appears to be low based on the number of tag recoveries to date. This closure is necessary to provide sufficient coho salmon to meet hatchery broodstock needs.
