PERMITS NOW AVAILABLE FOR COOK INLET AND NORTH GULF COAST TANNER CRAB FISHERY

(Homer) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) announced today that the Tanner crab sport and subsistence fisheries will open in Cook Inlet-Resurrection Bay from October 1, 2018, through February 28, 2019. A valid permit is required to participate in either fishery. Permits are ONLY available online through the ADF&G online store. Permits are located under “Fishing and Shellfish Permits” tab. While a Tanner Crab fishery permit may be obtained online, participants are required to have a printed and signed copy with you while fishing for Tanner crab, and your harvest must be reported in ink on your permit before your catch is concealed. Each permit holder is responsible for reporting online by March 15, 2019, even if the permit holder did not fish.

To receive a Tanner crab sport permit, a sport fishing license is required. Alaskan residents may receive a Tanner crab subsistence permit without a sport fishing license; however, the fishery is confined to the designated subsistence area. Maps of each area can be found on the online permit page of the sport and subsistence Tanner crab fishery areas. Individuals who receive both a subsistence and sport permit are reminded that having both permits does not allow for double the pot limit or double the bag and possession limits.

“ADF&G recently conducted trawl surveys in Kachemak Bay to assess the abundance of Tanner crab,” stated Area Management Biologist Carol Kerkvliet. “This fishery provides folks an opportunity to get out and harvest Tanner crab during the upcoming winter season.”

The daily bag and possession limit is three male Tanner crabs, four and one-half inches or greater in carapace (shell) width, including spines. One pot per person is allowed with a maximum of one pot per vessel. Please review complete shellfish regulations on pages 75 and 79 of the 2018 Southcentral Sport Fishing Regulations Summary booklet.

For additional information, please contact Sport Fish Area Management Biologist Carol Kerkvliet or Commercial Fisheries Area Management Biologist Jan Rumble (907) 235-8191.
