(Palmer) – Effective 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018, the Department of Fish and Game is increasing the sport fishing bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon to six fish per day and in possession within one-quarter mile of the confluence of Larson Creek with the Talkeetna River. Of the bag limit of six fish per day, no more than three fish per day and in possession may be pink, chum, and coho salmon in combination.

The sustainable escapement goal (SEG) for sockeye salmon in Larson Creek is 15,000—35,000 fish. The lower bound SEG was achieved on July 30 and the projected escapement of 40,000 fish exceeds the SEG range. The increase in harvest as a result of this action will not reduce the escapement below the lower bound of the SEG range.

“Larson Creek is a bright spot for sockeye salmon this year and we are happy to provide more opportunity for folks to put additional fish in the freezer,” stated Area Management Biologist Sam Ivey.

Only the bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon has been increased. The fishing area as defined in regulation and the nighttime fishing closure from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each day remains in effect per regulation.
