BUSKIN RIVER DRAINAGE SOCKEYE SALMON LIMITS INCREASED

(Kodiak) The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is increasing the sport fishing bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon, 20 inches or greater in length, in the Buskin River drainage to five fish. The bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon, less than 20 inches, remains at 10 fish. This emergency order will be in effect beginning 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, June 7.

The escapement goal for sockeye salmon into the Buskin River drainage is 5,000 to 8,000 fish. As of June 5, the weir count was 3,257 sockeye salmon. Based on historical run timing, the department expects the final weir count to exceed the established escapement goal for this stock. To provide additional sport harvest opportunity for sockeye salmon in the Buskin River drainage, the bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon, 20 inches or greater in length, is increased to five fish.
