AYAKULIK RIVER OPEN TO CATCH-AND-RELEASE FISHING FOR KING SALMON

Beginning at 12:01 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, the Ayakulik River drainage is open to king salmon fishing for catch-and-release only. The use of bait within the Ayakulik River drainage is prohibited to reduce hooking mortality on released king salmon.

The biological escapement goal (BEG) for the Ayakulik River king salmon is 4,000 to 7,000 fish. As of July 4, a total of 4,145 king salmon have passed the Ayakulik weir. Since the escapement goal has been achieved, the king salmon sport fishery will reopen. The run is more than 80% complete according to historical run-timing and recent poor returns since 2012 have only warranted a limited harvest of king salmon on the Ayakulik River.
