CHIGNIK RIVER KING SALMON HARVEST LIMITS RESTORED

Bag, possession, and annual limits for king salmon in the Chignik River were reduced earlier this season by emergency order in response to recent poor king salmon runs. However, the biological escapement goal (BEG) was recently achieved, and restrictions are no longer needed. Achievement of the BEG warrants restoring the bag limit for king salmon 20 inches or greater in length to two per day, two in possession with an annual limit of five fish.

The BEG for Chignik River king salmon is 1,300 to 2,700 fish. As of July 9, the Chignik River weir count was 1,435 king salmon. Based on historical run timing, the department expects to pass king salmon through the weir into early August. Harvest anticipated as a result of restoring the regulatory harvest limits for king salmon 20 inches or greater in length is not expected to reduce the spawning escapement below the BEG.
