Youth-Only Coho Salmon Fishing Day at the Eklutna Tailrace, Saturday, August 18

(Palmer) - The 2018 Eklutna Tailrace Coho Salmon Youth-Only Fishery will take place from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018. The Eklutna Tailrace was recently ranked as the top mom-approved place to fish in the nation.

The Eklutna Tailrace Youth-Only Fishery allows anglers 15 years and younger to fish for all species, including king salmon, from the confluence with the Knik River, upstream to the pedestrian bridge. The remainder of the Tailrace will be open to fishing for anglers of all ages. The Eklutna Tailrace is located at mile 3.5 on the Old Glenn Highway.

“We encourage adults to bring young anglers out to the Eklutna Tailrace on Saturday to give them a shot at catching coho salmon,” stated Assistant Area Management Biologist Samantha Oslund.

The daily bag and possession limit is three coho salmon. Anglers are allowed to use bait and multiple hooks, meaning no more than two single hooks or two treble hooks per line. Adults can assist young anglers in baiting the hook and casting, but as this fishery is open only to anglers 15 years of age and younger, anglers 16 years and up may not fish in the section open only to youth anglers, including catch-and-release, during that time. Youth anglers do not need a sport fishing license.

The Youth-Only Fisheries were established by the Alaska State Legislature and implemented by the Alaska Board of Fisheries to provide a special opportunity for young people to get out and go fishing.
