NEW SPORT FISHING REGULATIONS ADOPTED FOR KNIK RIVER, SUSITNA RIVER AND ANCHORAGE AREA IN 2014

The Alaska Board of Fisheries approved changes to sport fishing regulations that will take effect in the Northern Cook Inlet freshwater fisheries in 2014. Changes affecting various freshwater fisheries are summarized below as a service to anglers, and not as a complete digest of all fishing regulations.

Eklutna Tailrace: Youth-only fisheries for anglers 15 years of age and younger were designated for the third Saturday in June (king salmon fishery) and the third Saturday in August (coho salmon fishery) from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the confluence with the Knik river upstream to the pedestrian bridge.

Jim Creek: Waters open to fishing were redefined to include all waters of Jim Creek downstream to the Knik River and continuing downstream on the Knik River to within 100 yards of its confluence with Bodenburg Creek. In these waters:
• Sport fishing is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays from the second Saturday in August (August 9, 2014) through December 31.
• A person who takes a bag limit of salmon may not fish for any species of fish in waters open to salmon fishing on that same day.
• Leaf Lake and Mud Lake were added to the list of waters closed year-round to salmon fishing.

Little Susitna River: Beginning January 1, 2017, a person may not sport fish from a boat that is powered by use of a motor, unless the motor is a four-stroke motor or a direct fuel injection two-stroke motor. The Board delayed implementing the regulation until 2017 to allow people time to prepare for the change.

Deshka River: The starting date bait is allowed by regulation was changed from May 15 to June 1.
Fish Creek (Talkeetna River drainage): The Fish Creek drainage, upstream of an ADF&G marker ¼ mile upstream of its confluence with the Talkeetna River, is closed to sport fishing for all salmon year-round.

Anchorage Area Stocked Lakes: The bag and possession limit for salmon stocked into Anchorage Area lakes was reduced from 10 per day/10 in possession to 5 per day/5 in possession.
