Lake ice has been forming slowly because of the snow cover on the ice and recent mild temperatures. Lake ice should start to form more quickly if these colder temperatures remain. Always use extreme caution when traversing ice. Remember that ice will be thinnest over flowing water, inlet and outlet areas, deeper areas, and areas of upwelling.
The following measurements are only accurate in the areas in which they were taken. Previously mentioned conditions are a possibility on all of these lakes.
Quartz Lake 16 inches - 300 feet out from boat ramp
Birch Lake 15 inches - 300 feet out from boat ramp; 14 inches - 600 feet out
Chena Lake 20 inches - 300 feet out from boat ramp
Cushman Lake 16 inches - 300 feet out from canoe access
Harding Lake - 11 inches - 600 feet out from 5th Ave. boat access
