Freshwater Fishing

  • The upper sections of the Anchor River, Deep Creek, Stariski Creek, and the Ninilchik River opened to fishing for Dolly Varden and steelhead on August 1. There’s a fair number of dollies upstream of the south fork weir on the Anchor River. Using beads pegged under a small bobber is the most popular way to target these fish, but spoons, nymphs, small spinners, and occasionally dry flies, also work.
  • The lower sections of the Anchor River, Deep Creek, Stariski Creek, and the Ninilchik River are open to sport fishing. There are small numbers of dollies, pink salmon, and sockeye salmon. The daily counts of coho salmon are improving and the fishing should get better through the week. Try fishing at the mouth for newly arriving fish.

Saltwater Fishing

Halibut

  • Halibut fishing has been poor to fair over the last week due to unfavorable marine weather.
  • Try exploring for new spots to anchor by drifting to find halibut.
  • Herring on a circle hook is the most popular bait; however, octopus, salmon heads, and jigs also work well.

King Salmon

  • Trolling for king salmon has continued to be spotty with some fish scattered throughout Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet, including Bluff Point.
  • To target king salmon at locations with an abundance of pink salmon, try trolling deeper than pink salmon. Spoons are a better option over bait in these situations.

Coho Salmon

  • There is currently a large school of coho salmon in the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon. Expect slow to fair fishing over the next week. If the coho salmon aren’t biting cured roe or herring under a bobber, try a spinner to entice a bite. Early morning before the sun hits the water tends to be best.
  • Marine weather has limited anglers to target coho salmon in the offshore locations over the last week. Trolling the tip of the Homer Spit can be productive this time of year.

Other Saltwater Fishing

Most anglers targeting lingcod take a charter or have large personal boats to get to the outer coast and fish near the Chugach Islands.
