Week of August 12 - August 18

Freshwater Fishing

  • Saltery and Pasagshak are still getting some sockeye salmon, though both locations are getting some cohos now too. Most anglers are reporting that the incoming tides and near the mouth of both rivers is the best fishing right now. Water levels are still very low and warm.
  • Cohos are showing up in a lot of places around the island. In addition to a few being caught at Saltery and Pasagshak, anglers are seeing some in Monashka Bay, the Olds and Buskin rivers, and many of the drainages on Afognak Island.
  • Pinks are still coming into most local drainages too. There are still bright pinks being caught at the Buskin, Chiniak area creeks, and Russian and Sargent creeks. Bright pinks usually get harder to find by the second week of August but last year were still coming in through early September.

Saltwater Fishing

  • King salmon are still being caught in Kalsin Bay and in the Chiniak area. Fishing has been spotty in other usual spots such as Buoy 4. A few fish are being caught between Woody and Long Island and near the old dock on Woody Island.
  • Coho salmon are around in most local saltwaters and the most recent hot spot has been Chiniak, but cohos should be congregating in Monashka Bay right now as well. They are being caught at times between Woody and Long islands and at Ugak Island.
  • Halibut fishing is still plodding along with fish caught in most of the usual spots of Kodiak Rocks, Chiniak, Triple Lumps, and Buoy 4.

Local Lakes

  • Local stocked lakes are exceptionally warm right now so if you are aiming for rainbow trout, look for deeper lakes or shade for the best fishing!
