Week of July 17 - July 23

Freshwater Fishing

  • The sonar near Portage Creek on the Nushagak River has been operational since June 6 and a total of 41,505 king salmon have been counted by the sonar through July 15. This is well behind expected levels and a second Emergency Order restricting the king salmon sport fishery to catch and release only and no bait was issued on July 8 effective July 10. Please see the corresponding Emergency Order below. Sport fishing has been reported as poor to fair.
  • Sport fishing for king salmon in the Naknek and Alagnak river drainages is reported as fair. Sport fishing should remain steady or improve later this week.
  • In the Togiak River and nearby drainages fishing is currently reported as fair. Sport fishing should improve later this week as the weather cools.
  • In the Naknek, Alagnak, and Kvichak river drainages, fishing for rainbow trout should be fair to good. Try casting spinners or streamers.
  • Fishing for Arctic char is reported as fair in the Wood River Lakes system. Try casting or jigging spoons or stripping large streamers at the outlets of rivers in the system.
  • Fishing for northern pike in lakes throughout Bristol Bay has been fair to good. Try casting spoons, surface lures, or streamers close to shore in shallow weedy bays.
  • Due to higher than average water temperatures, anglers are reminded to land fish quickly and keep their catch in the water if it is going to be released to minimize stress on the fish.
