* Just a reminder to all our anglers, please do your part to help slow the spread of Covid-19 by following and reviewing the current State of Alaska Health Mandates in effect. This includes practicing social distancing while sport and personal use fishing and wearing a face covering when fishing and if you are needing fishing supplies from your local store as indicated in Health Alert 010.
Freshwaters
Silver Salmon
Silver fishing is starting to heat up on the Situk River. Anglers have had good success in the lower river. More than 40 fish passed the weir prior to it being removed on Friday August 7th. The conditions are excellent right now with high water levels and cooler water temperatures making it easier to present gear in many fashions. Pitch a spinner or spoon into a deep hole, drift a jig or worm under a float along a cutbank or swing a brightly colored streamer fly through a deep run to catch these fish. Remember to take off your treble hooks!
Pink Salmon
Pink salmon fishing is excellent. Large numbers of the fish have been entering the Situk the last couple weeks. Use anything to catch these fish.
Red Salmon
Fishing for red salmon on the Situk River has basically died off. The high water makes it difficult to find the fish upstream, and fish stopped entering the system about a week ago.
Saltwaters
King Salmon
Sport fishing in marine waters continues to be good for king salmon. Catch rates have remained good throughout the summer. Anglers are having the best success inside Yakutat Bay trolling green label herring behind flashers. Fish have been caught near The Pinnacles, Ocean Cape, Broken Oar Cove, Redfield Cove, and Knight Island.
Silver Salmon
Sport fishing for silver salmon in marine waters has started off really slow. A few silvers have been caught primarily out front near Ocean Cape. Fishing should only improve from this point.
Halibut
The halibut fishing has dropped off considerably the last couple of weeks. Dogfish and competing fisheries have decreased catch rates near Yakutat Bay. Fishing should improve in a couple of weeks as dogfish move out and pink salmon move closer inshore. Soaking salted herring, octopus or pink salmon works the best.
Lingcod
Lingcod fishing is slow. Try using rubber tube jigs over pinnacles or large rocky structure.
Rockfish
Fishing for pelagic rockfish continues to be good. Lots of rockfish have been caught over pinnacles and reefs during the last week. Try using metal jigs or mooching herring.
