Freshwater Fishing

The slow warm-up has left ice conditions undesirable for fishing. Breakup conditions can be monitored here: Breakup Map. While you wait for the rivers and lakes to clear, you can research new spots to fish. For a guide to where all the accessible fisheries are, check out Sport fishing Alaska rivers and lakes in the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna River Basin. This guide lists all the fisheries, species available, and mile markers along all the major highways crossing the Upper Copper and Upper Susitna Area.

Salmon

  • The 2022 Copper River salmon runs were delayed seven to nine days. Sockeye and king salmon are just now entering the Chitina Area in larger numbers. Sockeye salmon should be running in higher numbers in the Klutina River beginning next week. Unfortunately, the king salmon run appears to be much weaker than expected and is requiring the Department to restrict the Upper Copper River king salmon fisheries to catch and release only beginning June, 20. Secondly, the use of bait or treble hooks in the Copper River and Gulkana, Klutina, and Tonsina Rivers is also prohibited. Only one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure may be used in those waters.
