Salmon Fishing

King salmon fishing has reopened as of October 1st.

Fall king salmon fishing has been slow these past few weeks, with few fish being reported caught. Good spots to try for winter kings include around Auke Bay, backside of Douglas, and along the Admiralty shoreline. The following regulations apply to all marine waters in Southeast Alaska

Residents:

• Bag and possession limit is two king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length.
• Residents may use two rods when fishing for king salmon from October 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018. Residents fishing with two rods may only retain king salmon.

Nonresidents:

• Bag and possession limit is one king salmon greater than 28 inches in length.
• The nonresident annual limit is three king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length. Nonresidents shall immediately record, in ink, all king salmon harvested either on the back of their sport fishing license or on a nontransferable harvest record.

Freshwater Fishing Report

Twin Lakes Stocking

In anticipation of fall and winter ice-fishing, Twin Lakes was stocked last week with catchable-sized king salmon. Fish were good-sized and healthy, so before freeze-up pack up the ultralight gear and some small shrimp for bait and go bobber-fishing with the kids. The use of bait is allowed year-round on Twin Lakes, stocked catchable salmon limits are 10 daily and 10 in possession, 16 inches or less. Cutthroat and rainbow trout limits(in combination) are 5 daily, 5 in possession, no size limit

Salmon

Coho fishing in October has slowed, but a few fish are still being caught in Montana Creek and Cowee Creek out the road. When fishing for salmon in freshwater anglers are reminded that the bag and possession limits for coho on any stream crossed by the Juneau road system is 2 fish. This is different than the saltwater regulations which allow 6 daily and 12 in possession. Anglers are also reminded that bait and scented lures are currently prohibited in freshwater systems along the Juneau road system.

Dolly Varden/ Cutthroat Trout Fishing

Some Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout are currently still present in area streams. Anglers looking to catch these egg predators may have luck using bright orange lures or imitation egg pattern flies. Current hot spots to catch Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout include Montana Creek and Cowee Creek out the road. Anglers are reminded that the daily bag and possession limit for Dolly Varden are 2 daily and 2 in possession no size restrictions. For cutthroat and rainbow trout on the road system the limits are 2 daily and 2 in possession (in combination), 14 inch minimum and 22 inch maximum size limit.
