Description: The sonar on the Copper River is located at the outlet of Miles Lake, about 70 miles downstream from the Chitina dipnet fishery and 35 miles upstream from the commercial fishery’s closest boundary.

It takes approximately 2 weeks for salmon to travel from Miles Lake to Chitina but this is highly variable depending on the water level. The water levels listed on the sockeye salmon counts page are an indication of the general trends in Copper River discharge but may not be indicative of what is occurring upstream at Chitina.

The sockeye salmon counts presented on this page represent all salmon passage by the sonar. This includes king salmon and other species; however, the majority of each day’s counts are composed of sockeye salmon and therefore are representative of sockeye salmon abundance.

The current escapement goal for sockeye salmon is 360,000 to 750,000 fish and is graphed on the cumulative counts figure above. Counts for sockeye salmon are available the following day.

In 2018, the department began using an ARIS apportionment lens at the sonar. This technology allows for large king salmon to be identified from other salmon passing the site. Large king salmon are considered fish over 30.4 inches in length.

Determining the number of large king salmon in the daily salmon passage counts takes additional staff and time for processing. Data processing constraints typically result in a 3-day lag time. Therefore, estimates of large king salmon passage are not available on a next-day basis and instead, large king salmon counts will only be updated as data becomes available, typically on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

All large king salmon count data presented on the fish counts page inseason should be considered PRELIMINARY and subject to change.
