Pasagshak River Coho Salmon Bag Limit Increased

(Kodiak) - In support of additional harvest opportunity, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is increasing the bag and possession limit for coho salmon, 20 inches or greater in length, in the Pasagshak River drainage to three fish through the end of the year. This regulatory change is effective 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, September 27 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, December 31, 2023.

On September 22, 2023, a drone survey of the Pasagshak River drainage counted approximately 7,500 coho salmon. Though the escapement goal is typically assessed postseason during spawning in November, the department expects to achieve the goal even with the increased opportunity. Therefore, it is warranted to increase the bag and possession limit for coho salmon in this sport fishery.

“Coho salmon returns to the Kodiak Road System are strong this season and the Pasagshak River drainage is one of the largest coho salmon sport fisheries,” stated Area Management Biologist Tyler Polum. “In light of current surveys, it’s warranted to allow increased harvest opportunity for coho salmon in the drainage and allow anglers to take advantage of the large run of coho salmon.”
