Ship Creek Coho Salmon Limits Increased

(Anchorage) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is increasing the sport fish bag and possession limits for coho salmon, 16 inches or greater in length, to six fish per day and six fish in possession in the Ship Creek drainage from its mouth upstream to a cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant dam. This regulation change is effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, August 17 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2023.

“With the anticipation of meeting hatchery needs due to the number of coho salmon in the creek above the fishery, it is warranted to increase the bag and possession limits to allow anglers to harvest the surplus fish,” stated Area Management Biologist Brittany Blain-Roth.

Currently it is estimated that over 1,184 coho salmon have made it above the sport fishery with fish still entering Ship Creek. This will fulfill the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery coho salmon broodstock goal and natural spawning requirements for Ship Creek. It is justified to increase the coho salmon bag and possession limit to provide anglers an additional opportunity to harvest surplus fish still entering into Ship Creek.
