Ship Creek King Salmon Season Extended and Limits Increased

(Anchorage) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is extending the fishing season for king salmon on Ship Creek effective 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, July 14 through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021. In addition, the bag and possession limit for king salmon 20 inches or greater in length is increasing to two fish. The five fish annual limit and recording requirement for any king salmon 20 inches or greater that is harvested in Cook Inlet waters remain unchanged. The bag and possession limit for king salmon less than 20 inches remains at 10 fish. Sportfishing at Ship Creek remains closed from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. through Tuesday, July 13. If an angler catches a king salmon while fishing for coho salmon prior to August 1, they will be able to keep it and continue fishing for coho salmon. However, if they harvest a second king salmon while targeting coho salmon, they will need to quit fishing on Ship Creek for the day, even if they did not catch their coho bag limit.

“King fishing has slowed way down at Ship Creek,” stated Assistant Area Management Biologist Brittany Blain-Roth. “Coho salmon fishing is just starting to pick up. Extending the season and increasing the bag and possession limit for king salmon at Ship Creek allows more opportunity for anglers to harvest surplus king salmon should they catch one while fishing for coho salmon.”

A stream survey of Ship Creek was conducted on July 12, 2021. Nearly 1,000 king salmon were counted upstream of the fishery. Broodstock needs at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery are anticipated to be met and additional harvest opportunities for king salmon can be provided.
