Macaulay Hatchery Area Closed to Chum Salmon Fishing

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, sport fishing for chum salmon and snagging will be prohibited from the shoreline to 300 feet offshore between the regulatory marker at the southwest corner of the Wayside Park Pavilion to the Tonsgard Landing Dock (see attached map). Chum salmon may not be snagged, targeted, retained or possessed. Chum salmon caught while fishing for other species may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately unharmed. This closure will be in effect from July 15 through August 15, 2020.

Chum salmon returning to the Douglas Island Pink and Chum Inc. Macaulay Salmon Hatchery mill about along the shoreline and are vulnerable to harvest. This closure is necessary to provide an opportunity for chum salmon to make it up the fish ladder to meet egg-take goals needed for future production. If enough chum salmon are passed into the hatchery raceways, then this closure will be rescinded.
