KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSROOM SALMON EGG TAKES SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 5-6

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Aquatic Education Program and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will start this year’s “Salmon in the Classroom” program with two coho salmon egg-takes. The egg-takes will be at Bear Creek near Seward on Wednesday, October 5, and at the Anchor River in Anchor Point on Thursday, October 6.

Presentations by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be conducted hourly and are scheduled from 9:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Bear Creek, while Anchor River presentations are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. - 2:40 p.m.

Students in Kenai Peninsula Borough School District elementary schools will attend the egg takes. Students will arrive hourly at each location to participate in the egg takes and learn about salmon life cycles, egg fertilization, external anatomy, salmon identification, and habitat requirements.

Over 760 students are registered to attend. Each school will take approximately 300 eggs back to their classrooms to observe eggs develop into free-swimming coho salmon fry. The fry from these incubation projects will be released next spring back into Bear Creek or at a specified landlocked lake.

The incubation projects are part of the “Salmon in the Classroom” program to teach students about salmon biology. Students will watch eggs develop and learn about salmon in class this school year.
