ALASKA DEPT. OF FISH AND GAME SCHEDULES ANCHORAGE AREA SALMON CELEBRATION FRIDAY, MAY 26

At Campbell Creek Park, corner of Lake Otis and Tudor Blvd.

10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Stocking truck arrives about 11:30 a.m.

The Division of Sport Fish Aquatic Education Program will be holding the last “Salmon Celebration” in Anchorage for the year at Campbell Creek Park.  Six other Salmon Celebrations were held this spring around Southcentral Alaska, as part of the program’s goal to increase awareness of salmon and to foster a sense of stewardship towards this valuable natural resource.

Elementary school children from the Anchorage School District will help release 3,000 hatchery-raised silver salmon from 10:00-11:30.  The silver salmon are from the Fort Richardson State Fish Hatchery, and are part of the Division’s Campbell Creek silver salmon stocking program.  Students will then watch as the remaining 70,000 silvers are stocked into the creek by Division staff and local celebrities at about 11:30 a.m.

The Division of Sport Fish Mobile Aquatic Classroom will host aquatic education activities, and other hands-on activity booths and fishing stations will also be set up. This event could not take place without the volunteer assistance of Division staff, sixth grade students from Rabbit Creek Elementary School, and high school students from the King Career Center. Over 5,000 students have attended this year’s events so far, held in Anchorage, Palmer, Soldotna, Kodiak and Valdez.  Over 1,100 students are expected to attend this last Salmon Celebration of the season.

The silver salmon released at this event will head out to the ocean, where they will grow to adult size, and return in 2007 for Campbell Creek anglers to enjoy.
