(Anchorage) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is increasing the sport fish bag and possession limits for salmon, other than king salmon, 16 inches or greater in length, to six fish per day and six fish in possession in the Ship Creek drainage from its mouth upstream to a cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant dam. This regulation change is effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 31 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
Currently, it is estimated that nearly 1,100 coho salmon have passed upstream of the sport fishery in Ship Creek with fish still entering the creek daily. These fish will fulfill the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery coho salmon broodstock goal and natural spawning requirements for Ship Creek. It is justified to increase the salmon bag and possession limit to provide anglers with additional opportunity to harvest surplus coho salmon still entering Ship Creek.
“We are seeing a much better return of coho salmon this year as compared to last season and want to give anglers time to harvest these surplus fish by increasing the limits as early as possible,” Assistant Area Management Biologist Donald Arthur, said. “Anglers are reminded that king salmon limits remain at one per day and one in possession, and that the bag and possession limit for salmon, other than king salmon, is in combination of coho, chum, sockeye, or pink salmon.”
