9-Mile Bridge Section of Situk River Closed to Sport Fishing

(Yakutat) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish announced today that beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, June 15 through Friday, August 15, all sport fishing is closed in the Situk River from department markers located 50 yards upstream of the 9-mile Bridge, downstream to department markers located 50 yards downstream of the bridge (map below). Sport fishing for any species is prohibited within this area.

The Alaska Board of Fisheries, at its Southeast and Yakutat Finfish and Shellfish meeting in February, adopted a proposal to close this section of the Situk River known to hold large numbers of king salmon as they migrate upstream to spawn. This section of the Situk River will open to sport fishing after August 15 or when 1,050 large king salmon have passed the Situk River weir.
