CHIGNIK RIVER KING SALMON SPORT FISHERY CLOSED

Sport fishing for king salmon in the Chignik River is closed, and only one single hook, artificial lure is allowed for all sport fishing beginning Friday, July 26 through August 9. These restrictions apply to the entire Chignik River drainage downstream to Mensis Point.

The biological escapement goal (BEG) for king salmon in the Chignik River drainage is 1,300 to 2,700 fish. The weir count as of July 23, a point when 75% of the run has occurred based on historical run timing, is 921 king salmon. Despite previous management actions taken this year, additional measures are necessary to further reduce king salmon mortality. Therefore, the king salmon sport fishery is closed and only one unbaited, single hook, artificial lure may be used in the Chignik River drainage through August 9.

For more information contact the Division of Sport Fish office in Kodiak at (907) 486-1880.
