CHIGNIK RIVER KING SALMON SPORT FISHERY RESTRICTED TO NON-RETENTION

Beginning 12:01 a.m., Saturday, July 20, through 11:59 p.m., Friday, August 9, the Chignik River drainage sport fishery for king salmon 20 inches and greater in length is restricted to non-retention only. Catch and release fishing is allowed, but king salmon 20 inches or greater in length may not be retained, possessed or removed from the water and must be released immediately. In addition, only one unbaited, single hook, artificial lure may be used. These restrictions apply to the entire Chignik River drainage downstream to Mensis Point.

The biological escapement goal for king salmon in the Chignik River drainage is 1,300 to 2,700 fish. The weir count as of July 15 was 606 king salmon. Based on historical run timing, approximately 50% of the escapement has occurred by July 15, and management actions are necessary to reduce king salmon mortality.
