The Ayakulik River drainage is closed to sport fishing for king salmon beginning 12:01 a.m., Monday, July 8. As an added measure to reduce the probability of hooking mortality on incidentally caught king salmon, only one unbaited, single hook artificial lure may be used within the Ayakulik River drainage.
The biological escapement goal (BEG) for Ayakulik River king salmon is 4,000 to 7,000 fish. Despite previous management actions to the inriver sport fishery, the total weir count on July 2 of 1,963 fish indicates additional measures are necessary to further reduce king salmon mortality.
Anglers looking for opportunity off the road system in Kodiak are reminded that the department recently increased the bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon in the Karluk River drainage. Through July 15, the bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon in the Karluk River drainage is 10 fish per day, 10 in possession.
