It’s the perfect time of year to fish for burbot, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has just rolled out a new webpage that is all about how to catch burbot through the ice using set lines. Anyone who has ever wanted to try set-lining for burbot will find all the instruction they need to get started by visiting: www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=anglereducation.burbot or www.education.adfg.alaska.gov and click on the “For Anglers” link.

The page contains some written resources describing the key elements of set-lining for burbot, but the highlight of the site is the two “How-to” videos, How to Set Line for Burbot and How to Clean a Burbot. ADF&G encourages anglers to watch the videos and give set-lining a try.
Burbot are freshwater members of the cod family. The burbot has firm, white, mild tasting flesh. Burbot are often referred to as “poor man’s lobster” because when boiled and dipped in garlic butter they resemble lobster in texture and taste.
