Freshwater Fishing
- Coho fishing has been pretty slow in the roadside rivers with most of the effort focused on the Buskin, Pasagshak and Olds. There are some fish in each river, as well as the American, but the low, warm water has been making it very slow for fishing.
- Buskin weir counts are well behind where they should be and, unless something changes, a closure is imminent. Keep an eye out for news releases regarding the Buskin.
- Some silvers are being caught at Mill Bay and Mission Beach and returns seem average at these locations.
- Monashka Bay is very slow for silvers so far, with just a handful of fish reportedly caught at either Pillar Creek or White Sands.
- Saltery coho fishing has been better than the other coho runs this season with reports of good numbers of fish in the river and coming in with each tide, but also lots of fishing effort.
Saltwater Fishing
- No new reports of king salmon fishing have come in, likely due to the weather lately.
- When folks have been able to get out, halibut and lingcod fishing has been good with both being reported caught near the Fingers and around Kalsin Reef.
- Rockfish are still plentiful in most areas. See the emergency order below for more info for nonresident limits.
- Check your 2022 Southwest Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary booklet for species identification information.
- The use of a deepwater release mechanism is required on all sportfishing vessels in Alaska and they must be used to release rockfish back down to a depth of capture or 100 feet, whichever is shallower. Ever heard of the deepwater release? Check out our webpage for more info.
Local Lakes
Fall is a great time to fish stocked lakes, with the lakes in Bell’s Flats being favorites this time of year. Some of the biggest rainbows on the island have come from Caroline, Aurel and Cicely lakes over the years.
