Freshwater Fishing

  • Coho continue to slowly trickle into the road system rivers. Pasagshak and Buskin sound like the better spots for fishing but have also been sort of hit and miss from the sounds of it.
  • Some silvers are showing up at Mill Bay, Mission Beach and of Pillar Creek and White Sands as well.
  • The Buskin River weir count is at about 700 fish but compared to historical counts it is still pretty early in the run. A recent drone survey of Pasagshak showed around 1,000 fish in the lake.

Saltwater Fishing

  • King salmon fishing has been pretty spotty as of late with a few fish being picked up near Outer Humpback Rock and near the Fingers.
  • Coho fishing offshore has been intermittent as well but some fish are still being caught near the Fingers, Outer Humpback Rock as well as inside Monashka Bay.
  • Halibut and lingcod fishing was great this last week from most reports, with halibut in the 20-40lb range most common. Lingcod seem to be found along most reefs and rockpiles in Chiniak Bay right now.
  • Rockfish are still abundant in most areas. See the emergency order below for more info for nonresident limits.
    • Check your 2022 Southwest Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary booklet for species identification information.
    • The use of a deepwater release mechanism is required on all sportfishing vessels in Alaska and they must be used to release rockfish back down to a depth of capture or 100 feet, whichever is shallower. Ever heard of the deepwater release? Check out our webpage for more info.

Local Lakes

If you live on the Coast Guard Base or have access, the pond on Nyman’s Peninsula is stocked with rainbow trout annually and provides a great spot to fish for kids and adults alike. There may not be any monster sized fish, but there is usually very productive fishing for 12-16 inch rainbows.
