Freshwater Fishing

  • A few coho are around the road system rivers but fishing has been slow for the most part with Pasagshak seeing the most fish over this last weekend. The water is up in nearly all of the rivers and many are very murky.
  • The Buskin River has seen a couple hundred coho through the weir to date, but the weir was also flooded for nearly a week. There seem to be fish being caught here and there but very sporadic.
  • Coho runs on Afognak seem to be past their peak right now, with fishing being very slow in the lagoons and better in the lakes and rivers.
  • There are still a lot of bright pinks around and they seem to still be coming into the rivers. There are even some to be caught off Pillar Creek and the beaches in Chiniak as well.

Saltwater Fishing

  • King salmon fishing has slowed down a lot from what July and early August held. There are some fish being picked up near Kalsin Reef and a few at Buoy 4 and the Fingers still.
  • Coho fishing has also slowed near the Fingers and Buoy 4, but has picked up in a few other areas like Ugak Island, Kalsin Reef and Monashka Bay. Remember that the bag limit for coho in Monashka Bay is 2 per day.
  • Halibut and lingcod fishing both sound spotty from what folks are reporting but the weather has also hindered many people from getting out to their normal spots. Whale Pass and Williams Reef seem to be the consistent halibut spots this year and lingcod are being found frequently at the Fingers and Kodiak Rocks areas.
  • Rockfish are still abundant in most areas. See the emergency order below for more info for nonresident limits.
    • Check your 2022 Southwest Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary booklet for species identification information.
  • The use of a deepwater release mechanism is required on all sportfishing vessels in Alaska and they must be used to release rockfish back down to a depth of capture or 100 feet, whichever is shallower. Ever heard of the deepwater release? Check out our webpage for more info.

Local Lakes

For those looking for a quick fishing excursion, don’t forget there are 4 lakes stocked with rainbow trout right in town: Abercrombie, Dark, Island and Lilly lakes. Abercrombie and Lilly lakes seem to be the better producers as of late.
