Week of July 31 – August 6

Freshwater Fishing

• A youth-only fishery on Fish Creek will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4 from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. each day. The fishery allows anglers age 15 and younger to fish for all species, except king salmon, in waters between ADF&G markers ¼ -mile up stream of Knik-Goose Bay Road, downstream to the mouth. The daily bag limit is three salmon/ only two per day may be silver salmon. The weekend-only fishery for all other anglers will commence on August 10.
• Coho and chum fishing is generally good on the Little Susitna River with some limits being taken downstream from the Little Su Public Use Facility. The water is low; use caution navigating by boat. Anglers are reminded that bait is not allowed on the Little Susitna River until August 6, and the daily bag and possession limit for coho salmon is two fish.
• Pinks are in high abundance in all clearwater tributaries of the Susitna drainage. The mouths of the Parks Highway streams have been providing excellent salmon fishing opportunity and cohos are being caught now too. This is the perfect time of year to get the kids fishing. Try the mouths of Willow, Little Willow, Bull Frog Slough, Kashwitna, Sheep, Caswell, and Montana Creeks. Coho are beginning to show up on the Talkeetna River as well. This weekend and into next weekend might be some of the most productive fishing opportunities of the summer.
• Wasilla and Cottonwood creeks are weekend-only fisheries, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Wasilla Creek is open to fishing for salmon other than king salmon, from its mouth upstream to the AK Railroad bridge; and Cottonwood Creek from its mouth upstream one mile. Coho and sockeye fishing is expected to be good at Cottonwood Creek this weekend.
• At Jim Creek, beginning August 1, sport fishing for any species is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, fishing is allowed only between 5:00 a.m.- 10:00 p.m. Wednesdays - Sundays for all species. Sockeye and some coho are now being caught at Jim Creek.
• On the west side of Cook Inlet, coho are entering the Chuit and Theodore rivers. Once you take your limit of coho salmon in this area you must stop fishing for the day.
• Fishing for rainbow trout on the Parks Highway streams from Willow Creek north is excellent. Water levels are favorable for fishing and extremely clear. Fishing for Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling should be good too.

Local Lakes

• Get the kids camping before school starts. Stocked lakes with camping opportunities include Kepler/Bradley, Finger, Matanuska, Lucile, Nancy, Rocky, Knob and North Knob (undeveloped) lakes.
