Fathead Minnow Removal at Kenai Pond July 15 - 16

(Soldotna) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Sport Fish will be eradicating illegally introduced nonnative fathead minnows from a man-made 1-acre pond located on the City of Kenai property near Backwood Avenue.

The treatment is scheduled for July 15 - July 16, 2019. The removal will involve partially draining the pond and treating the remaining pond water with a fish pesticide containing rotenone. Rotenone is a plant-based substance lethal to fish but safe to most nongilled organisms at treatment levels. Signs will be posted near the pond notifying the public prior to and after the treatment. Public access to the pond will not be allowed during the treatment. The rotenone is expected to fully degrade naturally in about 10 days. As a precaution, ADF&G advises the public to avoid contact with the pond water until the rotenone is fully degraded and the treatment signage is removed.
