Requested Tracking Map
We are pleased to announce that the North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management (NSB-DWM) deployed two more CTD tags on spotted seals on 25 August. The two spotted seals, SS16-08-M and SS16-09-F were tagged in Dease Inlet with CTD tags attached to their backs. Ten seals have been tagged as part of this collaborative project. Movements made by these seals will be reported on maps prepared by both ADF&G and NSB-DWM.

During the last ten days we have received locations for 2 bearded seals, 2 ringed seals, and 7 spotted seals. One bearded seal, BS16-04-F (purple line) is in Norton Sound. Ringed seal RS16-07-M (yellow line) is in the northern Chukchi Sea near sea ice. The rest of the seals are generally in the northeast Chukchi Sea or southwest Beaufort Sea. All seven of the spotted seals tagged have left Dease Inlet. Five of the seven spotted seals have moved southwest along the Chukchi Sea coast with some traveling through Peard Bay and lagoons near Icy Cape. As for the other two spotted seals, SS16-06-F moved east, into Smith Bay and SS16-07-M moved west of Barrow toward sea ice. No clear satellite images were available from the NASA Rapid Response Network because of thick cloud cover again this week. Therefore, sea ice data are courtesy of the University of Bremen, Germany, and dated 29 August (http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de:8084/amsr2/).
