We are pleased to announce that the North Slope Borough, Department of Wildlife Management (NSB-DWM) tagged a young, male spotted seal in Dease Inlet, near Utqiaġvik (Barrow), Alaska on 25 July. SS17-05-M was tagged by NSB_DWM personnel with a transmitter (CTD manufactured by the Seal Mammal Research Unit, University of St. Andrews, UK) provided by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game as part of a collaborative project.

During the last 10 days we have received locations for 2 ringed and 6 spotted seals. One ringed seal (RS17-01-M, red arrow) is in the northeast Chukchi Sea, southwest of Utqiaġvik, while the second ringed seal (RS17-02-M, yellow arrow) is in the Beaufort Sea, north of Utqiaġvik. The spotted seal recently tagged near Utqiaġvik is 50 miles southwest of Utqiaġvik (SS17-05-M, pink circle). Two of the three spotted seals tagged near Scammon Bay earlier in July are still within 50 miles of Scammon Bay (SS17-02-M, blue circle, and SS17-03-F, red circle). The third spotted seal tagged near Scammon Bay (SS17-04-M, green circle) has moved north and is currently located south of Wales. Sea ice data are courtesy of the U.S. National Ice Center, dated 31 July (https://earthdata.nasa.gov/earth-observation-data/near-real-time/rapid-response/modis-subsets).
