The Southeast Sustainable Salmon Fund
Background Information

The Department of Fish and Game, on behalf of the State of Alaska, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Marine Fisheries Service for management of the Southeast Sustainable Salmon Fund (SSSF). Over the life of the fund, projects have been funded within the following categories:

Increasing Economic Opportunities (pdf)
Habitat and Restoration pdf)
Outreach and Education pdf)
Watershed Planning and Assessment(pdf)
Research, Monitoring and Evaluation (pdf)
Designated by Congress (pdf)

A Science Coordination Panel assists in evaluating proposals, provides recommendations for salmon stock and salmon habitat projects, and supports communication between governmental and other entities to help prevent duplication of efforts. The panel has developed a SSSF Plan and related Gap Analysis to help guide the use of SSSF and other funds.

An Advisory Panel, consisting of commissioners of several state agencies and representatives of the Governor’s Office, evaluates proposals and makes recommendations regarding an allocation of economic opportunity funding. SSSF funds are currently a component of Governor Murkowski’s Fisheries Revitalization Strategy through which funding has been provided for Southeast Alaska-related salmon infrastructure, salmon marketing, and salmon-related product research and development. Information on the Fisheries Revitalization Strategy can be found through the Department of Community and Economic Development web site at: http://www.commerce.state.ak.us/oed/seafood/revitalization/ .
