Abstract: This report summarizes the 2016 season and historical information regarding commercial salmon fisheries of the South Alaska Peninsula Management Area (Area M). The total commercial salmon harvest, excluding department test fishery harvest, in Area M was 13,449 Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 2,477,821 sockeye salmon O. nerka, 185,104 coho salmon O. kisutch, 2,871,303 pink salmon O. gorbuscha, and 424,444 chum salmon O. keta. Harvest of Chinook, sockeye, and pink salmon were above recent 10-year averages (2006?2015). Harvest of chum and coho salmon was below recent 10-year averages. 236 permit holders participated in the fishery. The June commercial salmon harvest included 6,113 Chinook, 1,292,860 sockeye, 1,716 coho, 2,510,048 pink, and 270,614 chum salmon. Harvest in the South Unimak fishery was 1,860 Chinook, 876,963 sockeye, 1,528 coho, 1,836,319 pink, and 148,850 chum salmon, whereas the Shumagin Islands accounted for 4,253 Chinook, 415,897 sockeye, 188 coho, 673,729 pink, and 121,764 chum salmon. There were a total of 3 commercial salmon fisheries in the Southeastern District Mainland (SEDM) during the allocation period, June 1 through July 25. The total commercial harvest in the SEDM in 2016 was 532 Chinook, 376,155 sockeye, 6,550 coho, 21,391 pink, and 14,311 chum salmon. The total commercial harvest for the Northwest Stepovak Section, from July 1 through July 25, was 193 Chinook, 257,667 sockeye, 2,773 coho, 12,201 pink, and 9,655 chum salmon. The South Alaska Peninsula Post-June salmon harvest from July 1 through October 31 (minus the SEDM fishery July 1?25) was 6,804 Chinook, 808,806 sockeye, 176,838 coho, 339,864 pink, and 139,519 chum salmon. In 2016, the sockeye salmon sustainable escapement goal (SEG) for Orzinski Lake (15,000?20,000 sockeye salmon) was exceeded with an escapement of 21,019 sockeye salmon. Total escapement of pink salmon (1,038,160 fish) was below the South Alaska Peninsula SEG range of 1,750,000?4,000,000 fish. In the Southeastern district, chum salmon escapement was estimated at 150,456 fish, within the SEG of 106,400?212,800 fish. In the Southwestern district, chum salmon escapement was estimated at 220,060 fish, within the SEG of 133,400?266,800 fish. In the South Central district, chum salmon escapement was estimated at 248,360 fish, which exceeded the SEG of 89,800?179,600 fish. Limited coho salmon surveys were conducted due to late season run timing.
