Week of August 7 - August 13

Freshwater Fishing

  • Sport fishing for king salmon is now closed by regulation throughout Bristol Bay.
  • Due to low water and higher than average water temperatures, anglers are reminded to land fish quickly and keep their catch in the water if it is going to be released to minimize stress on the fish.
  • A total of 11,619 coho salmon have been counted by the Nushagak sonar near Portage Creek through August 5. This is well behind expected levels; however, numbers have been improving and we will continue to monitor these numbers closely for the next 2 weeks. Management will be in accordance with the Nushagak River Coho Salmon Management Plan. Please call 907-842-2427 for the latest updates on this fishery. Sport fishing is currently reported as fair to good.
  • In the Naknek drainage coho salmon are beginning to arrive and fishing is reported as fair and should improve later this week.
  • In the Alagnak drainage it is still early for coho salmon and fishing is reported as poor to fair. Fishing should improve later this week or next week.
  • In the Togiak River and nearby drainages few anglers have been targeting coho salmon and only a few fish have been reported but it is still early and fishing should improve later this week.
  • In the Naknek, Alagnak, and Kvichak river drainages, fishing for rainbow trout is reported as good. Try casting spinners, streamers, or egg patterns.
  • Fishing for Arctic char continues to be reported as fair in the Wood River Lakes system. Try casting or jigging spoons or stripping large streamers.
  • Fishing for northern pike in lakes throughout Bristol Bay has been fair. Try casting spoons, surface lures, or streamers close to shore in shallow weedy bays.
