Steelhead Trout
Steelhead fishing has been good on the Situk River so far this year. Fish are present throughout the river system and some spawning has been taking place. Water levels are good with moderately high flows and fishable conditions throughout. The heavy snowload has kept water levels slightly higher than normal and water temperatures on the cool side. The next week will be bringing clear skies and sun which should help to start lowering water levels slowly and warm up the water for spawning.
Based on fish entry timing, late spawning events on typical spawning beds, and cooler water temps and heavy snowload, it’s looking like later run-timing this year. Some spawning has been observed so far, but not in locations where the majority of fish historically spawn. Spawning should be occuring en masse soon. We encourage anglers not to target spawning fish and to take care to avoid stepping on redds while wading the river.
As a reminder, the upper Situk closure area, 2 miles upstream of 9-mile bridge and 2 miles downstream from Situk Lake, will be closed from April 15 to May 15.
