(Kodiak) - In support of additional harvest opportunities, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is increasing the coho salmon bag limit for the Buskin River to two per day and in possession through the end of the year. This regulatory change is effective at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, September 16 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2021.
Weir counts at the Buskin River weir through September 12 were 6,599 coho salmon. Since the run is historically only 38% complete, the escapement is anticipated to exceed the escapement goal of 4,700 to 9,600 even when accounting for harvest upstream of the weir. Therefore, it is warranted to increase the bag and possession limit for coho salmon in the sport fishery.
“Coho salmon returns to the Buskin River are strong this season and escapement objectives have been achieved before the historical midpoint of the run,” stated Area Management Biologist Tyler Polum. “Even with increased potential for harvest and accounting for fish harvested upstream of the weir already, it’s warranted to allow increased harvest opportunity for coho salmon for the rest of the year.”
