Alaska Invasive Species Awareness Week

(Statewide) – Governor Walker proclaimed June 18th - 24th, 2017 to be Alaska Invasive Species Awareness Week. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game continues to work throughout the year with federal, state, tribal and local entities to prevent, detect and control invasive species statewide. In recognition of Invasive Species Awareness Week, Alaskans are encouraged to participate in invasive species cleanup events, take measures to learn about invasive species and how to prevent their spread, and become familiar with how to report invasive species found at your favorite recreational areas.

  • When boating or fishing, remember to Clean, Drain and Dry your boat and trailer, and your fishing equipment before you move between water bodies.
  • Report invasive species online by visiting the department’s online Invasive Species Reporter http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=invasive.report or calling the Hotline: 1-877-INVASIVE.

Activities occurring around the state related to Invasive Species Awareness Week include:

  • Fish and Game will be continuing their invasive northern pike detection and control measures in Southcentral Alaska, and will be wrapping up a 4-year eradication project in the Soldotna Creek drainage on the Kenai Peninsula.
  • The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District will lead an invasive aquatic plant eradication effort in Chena Slough along with assistance from a number of federal, state, and local entities. Crews will be applying an herbicide to eradicate elodea from Chena Slough June 21st – 23rd.
