BAIT ALLOWED IN TANANA RIVER TRIBUTARIES

The Division of Sport Fish is allowing the use of bait, where permitted by regulation, in tributaries of the Tanana River drainage. This regulation will be in effect 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 15.

As of July 11, 170,225 king salmon were counted at Pilot Station, and estimated king salmon escapement at the Salcha and Chena river counting towers indicate that escapements will be near the upper end of the escapement goals. Subsistence and commercial fishing has been open on a full regulatory schedule in Districts 6A and B since July 11 with unrestricted mesh, and personal use and commercial fishing will open in 6C on a full regulatory schedule with unrestricted mesh on July 15.

Because escapement goals are anticipated to be achieved, the use of bait is consistent with the provisions set forth in the Chena and Salcha River King Salmon Sport Harvest Management Plan (5 AAC 74.060). Please refer to pages 24 – 27 of the Northern Alaska Sport Fishing Regulation Summary to confirm in which waters bait is allowed in the Tanana River drainage.
