 A portion of the Eklutna Tailrace from the confluence with the Knik River, up-stream to the pedestrian bridge, will be open for fishing only to anglers age 15 and younger on Saturday, June 18 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The remainder of the Tailrace will be open to fishing for anglers of all ages.

The daily bag and possession limit is one king salmon 20 inches or longer. The daily bag and possession limit for king salmon less than 20 inches in length is 10. Youth anglers must carry a free Harvest Record Card available at any license vendor in order to immediately record harvested king salmon 20 inches or longer.

“Fishing at the Eklutna Tailrace has been good,” Samantha Oslund, the Assistant Area Management Biologist in Palmer said. “This Youth-Fishery is a great opportunity for young anglers to come out and fish for king salmon.”

The Eklutna Tailrace is located at mile 3.5 on the Old Glenn Highway.

Angling families are encouraged to participate in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Five Salmon Family Challenge. The program provides a certificate of recognition to angling families who catch and document the five species of Pacific salmon commonly found in Alaska. More information can be found online here:

Youth fisheries were established by the Alaska State Legislature and implemented by the Alaska Board of Fisheries to provide special opportunity for young people to catch fish. An additional Youth Fishing Day at the Eklutna Tailrace this season will be on Saturday, August 20.
