SPORT FISHING OPENED IN HERRING COVE CREEK AND HERRING BAY SPECIAL HARVEST AREA

Beginning Wednesday, October 7, 2015 the Herring Bay Special Harvest Area will open to sport fishing. Anglers are reminded that special regulations for Herring Cove Creek remain in effect;


• Upstream from the highway: Closed to sport fishing.


• Downstream from highway to the ADF&G regulatory markers located approximately 300 yards downstream,
     · Sport fishing is allowed August 10 - December 31;
     · Coho, chum, pink and sockeye salmon limits (in combination) 2 daily, 2 in possession, 16 inches or greater in length;
     · Coho, chum, pink and sockeye salmon limits (in combination) 10 daily, 10 in possession, less than 16 inches in length.


Southeast Alaska general sport fishing regulations for saltwater remain in effect for Herring Bay. These regulations can be found in the Southeast Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary.


The Herring Bay Special Harvest Area was closed to sport fishing on September 24th, 2015 to protect coho salmon broodstock returning to the Whitman Lake Hatchery. The coho salmon broodstock goal of 4,000 fish has been met. There is no longer a need to prohibit sport fishing in the Herring Bay Special Harvest Area.
