The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced today that the salt water area at the mouth of Pullen Creek will be closed to king salmon sport fishing starting June 26. The closed area extends east of a line from a department marker on the Railroad Dock to a department marker on the Ore Terminal Dock, including the area off the mouth of Pullen Creek (see attached map). King salmon returning to Pullen Creek hold in salt water until a sufficient high tide permits them to migrate through a culvert at the Pullen Creek Outlet, making them vulnerable to sport anglers. In 2010 through 2012, the Pullen Creek broodstock goal was not met. Tag recoveries to date indicate that the goal may not be met in 2014. This area closure is needed to ensure sufficient numbers of king salmon enter this stream for broodstock needs.

Anglers are reminded that fresh waters of Southeast Alaska are closed to king salmon fishing. However, if broodstock needs are met, Pullen Creek upstream of the broodstock collection weir may be opened to harvest excess king salmon.
