Chatanika River Personal Use Whitefish Spear Fishery Permits Available

Chatanika River Personal Use Whitefish Spear Fishery permits are now available at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Fairbanks office located at 1300 College Road. Permits will be issued on a first come, first served basis. A total of 225 permits will be issued. These permits are not available online or at other ADF&G offices.

Only one permit will be issued per household. Permit applicants must be Alaska residents and have a valid resident sport fishing license, which can be purchased online. Whitefish can only be taken by spear in the Chatanika River drainage under personal use regulations with a personal use permit; the use of spears to take whitefish in the Chatanika River drainage under sport fishing regulations is prohibited. Whitefish can be taken by hook and line in the Chatanika River drainage under general sport fishing regulations.

Each household permit authorizes a harvest of 10 whitefish in that portion of the Chatanika River from the downstream side of the Elliott Highway Bridge to ADF&G markers located at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline crossing (approximately seven river miles downriver from the bridge).

The 2017 Chatanika River Personal Use Whitefish Spear Fishery will be open from 12:01 a.m. September 15 through 11:59 p.m. October 15.
