SPORT FISHING CLOSED IN HERRING COVE CREEK AND HERRING BAY SPECIAL HARVEST AREA

Beginning Thursday, September 24, 2015 the Herring Bay Special Harvest Area will close to sport fishing. This closure includes Herring Cove Creek downstream of the bridge and the portion of Herring Bay bound by a line from a point of land on George Inlet at the east side of Lot 39, USS 3397, bearing 18°12’ to a point of land on the southern edge of Lot 91, USS 2403 (see map below).
Coho salmon returning to Whitman Lake hatchery are not expected to meet broodstock goals in 2015 due to expected harvest and marine survival. To date approximately 1,000 fish have returned to the hatchery, while 4,000 fish are needed for broodstock. With additional harvest expected, this closure is necessary to provide sufficient numbers of coho salmon to meet broodstock needs.
