FILLETING AND DE-HEADING OF KING SALMON AT-SEA PROHIBITED FOR ANGLERS RETURNING TO KODIAK ROAD SYSTEM PORTS

Marine boat anglers returning to ports within the Kodiak Road system will be prohibited from filleting, mutilating, and de-heading sport caught king salmon at-sea. Marine boat anglers returning to any port on the road system from May 31 - August 31 may not fillet, mutilate, or de-head these fish until they have been brought to shore and offloaded, unless the fish have been consumed or preserved on board.

The purpose of this restriction is to maximize information obtained through ADF&G angler interviews and dockside sampling on king salmon length- sex and identification of tagged king salmon, which can only be obtained when fish are intact. On-site sampling will be conducted during the fishing season at Kodiak city harbors to estimate sport fishing effort and harvest, and the contribution of hatchery and selected wild stocks of king salmon to the local sport fishery.

This action does not prohibit gutting and gilling king salmon before returning to the ports. Anglers may fillet and head king salmon once the vessel on which those fish were taken is tied up at a docking facility where the fish will be offloaded.

For more information contact the Division of Sport Fish office in Kodiak at (907) 486-1880.
