BAIT AND MULTIPLE HOOK RESTRICTIONS LIFTED IN THE KASILOF RIVER SPORT FISHERY

The use of bait and multiple hooks is restored in the Kasilof River from its mouth upstream to the Sterling Highway bridge, effective 12:01 a.m., Saturday, July 25, through 11:59 p.m., Friday, July 31, 2015.  Anglers are reminded to review the regulations for the Kasilof River in the 2015 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary Booklet.  Several emergency orders have been issued during 2015 to conserve both early- and late-run Kenai and Kasilof river king salmon stocks that have been experiencing a period of low productivity and below average run strength since 2009.  The department’s information, including data from inriver assessment programs as well as king salmon catch data from the Cook Inlet Central District Upper Subdistrict set gillnet fishery, indicates king salmon abundance in general remains below long-term averages, however is much improved over recent years.

An emergency order was issued to allow the use of bait in the king salmon sport fishery in the Kenai River drainage during July.  Therefore, it is no longer necessary to minimize the effects of conservation actions for the Kenai River on the Kasilof River.
